Chennai, Sep 29 (UNI) In a mid-night swoop, more than 1000 people, including history-sheeters and anti-social elements, were taken into preventive custody in view of the October 1 ''Hartal'' called by the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance in the State to mobilise people's support for the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project.
This followed simultaneous raids conducted by various police teams, formed by Chennai City Police Commissioner Nanchil Kumaran in several areas.
Lodges, important junctions and check-posts were searched.
During the searches about 1,200 persons were interrogated.
Of them, 157 were rowdy elements, 56 held under NBW and 179 persons ex-convicts.
