Srinagar, Sep 29 (UNI) Playing a major role in the modern day battle field after the emphasis shifted to destruction with offensive fire power, the ''Gunners'' celebrated 180th anniversary across the Kashmir valley.
This was vindicated by the Gunners during the Kargil war after they rose to the challenge and broke the will of the enemy to fight, a defence ministry spokesman said.
The entire Gunners fraternity of Chinar Corps celebrated the anniversary all over the valley organising functions. However, the main function was held at Badami Bagh Cantonment to mark the historical occasion.
The Regiment of Artillery in India was raised on September 28, 1827 as Bombay Artillery, which was later renamed as 5 Bombay Mountain Battery.
Lt General A S Sekhon, GOC 15 Corps in his message to all ranks of the Regiment of Artillery in the Valley said the Gunners had displayed exceptionally high order of professionalism, grit, determination, gallantry, steadfastness and selfless devotion in execution of any task assigned.
''I am proud of your commitment and performance,'' Lt General Sekhon said, adding that he was confident that the Gunners would continue to strive to scale even greater heights.
Brigadier KJ Singh, Commander 15 Corps Artillery Brigade reiterated the resolve of Gunners in Kashmir Valley for the utmost dedication in the service of the nation.
