CM announces relief to flood hit people in Goa

Panaji, Sep 29: Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has announced Rs.10,000 financial assistance to each of the shop owners affected by flash floods in north Goa's Sattari and Bicholim talukas following heavy rains in catchment area in the bordering Maharashtra.

The Chief Minister has also ordered survey of the houses damaged in the floods for extending relief. About 1000 people besides 200 shops have been affected in the floods with no loss of life, according to preliminary reports.

Mr Kamat, who along with Water Resources Minister Philipe Neri Rodrigues and a posse of officials visited the flood affected areas of Sanquelim, Bicholim, Keri, Poriem, Morlem and others yesterday to assess the flood situation.

Talking to media, Mr.Rodrigues said today that a committee of locals would soon be constituted to propose permanent measures for preventing floods in the area which include desilting of Valvanti river.

Meanwhile, the flood water started receding since September 28 giving relief to the affected people. Educational institutions had been closed in the area temporarily and the authorities were monitoring the situation.
