American Express asked to pay compensation to senior advocate

Bhubaneswar, Sep 29 (UNI) The Orissa State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission has asked the multinational American Express Bank Ltd to pay a senior advocate an compensation of Rs one lakh for gross deficiencies in service provided by the bank.

A Commission bench comprising Chairman Justice R K Patra and member Subas Mahatab have recently directed the bank to pay the compensation to advocate Bijan Ray by November 30 failing which it would incur an interest at the rate of nine per cent.

Mr Ray, a senior advocate of Orissa High Court had claimed a compensation of Rs 19 lakh for the embarrassment he and his wife had suffered following the dishonour of the Global Valid Cards issued by the bank by several establishment in the US during their visit to the foreign country in April 2000.

On his return Mr Ray had terminated the cards and filed a suit for damages in the consumer commission.
