60-year-old surrogate mother delivers twins
Pune, Sep 29 (UNI) A 60-year-old woman, serving as a surrogate mother on her daughter's behalf, delivered twins, both males, at a city hospital here recently.
Dr Sunita Tandulwadkar, head of the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) centre at the Ruby Hall clinic here, told reporters that the woman's daughter was unable to conceive due to genital cancer.
The 60-year-old woman, offered to carry the pregnancy as her US-based daughter did not want a surrogate mother from outside the family.
Dr Tandulwadkar said that pregnancy is not advisable at this age, yet the couple (who have requested anonymity) were liad insisted and since the elderly woman had no health problems, doctors decided to go ahead.
The twins weighing 1.7 kg and 1.4 kg are in good health under neo-natal care, Dr Tandulwadkar added.
