New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Increasing urban violence and crime has prompted the United Nations Organsiations to choose 'A Safe City is a Just City' as the theme of this year's World Habitat Day to be celebrated on October 1.
The UNO chose this theme in order to raise awareness and encourage reflection on the mounting threats to urban safety, social injustice, forced eviction and insecurity of tenure as well as natural and man-made disasters.
On the occasion, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation will release special publication of Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd (HUDCO), Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC) and National Cooperative Housing Federation of India (NCHF).
The Minister will also give away the prizes to the winners of NHB Essay Competition for 2007 and Painting Competition for physically and visually challenged children.
The UNO has designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of human settlements and basic right to adequate shelter for all.
It is also intended to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
