Rich tributes paid to martyrs

Amritsar, Sep 28 (UNI) The nation today paid rich tributes to martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at a national level function organised to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-E-Azam Bhagat Singh here.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Uttrakhand Chief Minister Maj Gen (Retd.) B C Khandoori and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal were among scores of leaders who paid tributes to the martyrs.

They visited historic Jallianwala Bagh and laid wreaths at the Flame of Liberty symblolising sacrifices made by the martyrs. They also paid respects at Amar Jyoti at Jallianwala Bagh. Later they visited Sri Harmandir Sahib and paid obeisance at Sanctumn Sanctorum.

On this occasion, the Union Home Minister released a book ''Jail Dairy of Shaheed Bhagat Singh'' published by Information and Public Relations Department, Punjab, while the Punjab Chief Minister honoured Mr Abhey Sandhu and Mr Kiranjit Sandhu, both nephews of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. Mr Patil also released a special issue of Punjabi Jagriti on Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

Thousands of youth dressed in yellow turbans and white Kurta Payajama attended the function. Slogans like 'Inqlab Jindabad' rent the air.
