New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Paying tribute to the sacrifices of heroes of the freedom struggle, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh today flagged off the 'Azadi Express' a Mobile Train Exhibition depicting the epoch-defining moments of the country's freedom struggle.
The train exhibition that would cover 70 destinations across the country has been organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as part of the celebrations of 150 years of the 1857 Mutiny and 60 years of Independence.
It will journey for eight months before winding up on May 15 next year.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Singh said he was feeling honoured to flag off the 'Azadi Express'.
''We have to take inspiration from our freedom struggle to guide our future course of action,'' he said.
He said the decision to launch the train was taken by the National Implementation Committee as part of the celebrations of 150th year of the First War of Independence, as it would create awareness among the people of the events which constituted the bedrock of the freedom struggle.
In his remarks, Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs P R Dasmunsi exhorted the younger generation to revive the spirit of patriotism and follow the ideals of martyrs like Bhagat Singh.
The train will be stationed on each destination for two to three days to enable the people to experience the spirit of the national struggle for independence.
The exhibits include photographs, diaroma, cut outs, scrollers and videos. It would have several sections devoted to various phases of the national movement like rise of the spirit of freedom, events leading to landmark events like the Quit India Movement of 1942, the partition of the country, the transfer of power and the making of the Constitution.
The exhibition also covers various social movements like the indigo farmers issue, Champaran happenings, the rise of national press, patriotic literature, Bhoodan Movement of Acharya Vinobha Bhave and participation of women in the freedom movements.
Book, cards and mementos on the theme of 1857 and freedom struggle would be made available at special sale counters in the train.
The exhibition is a project of the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity of the Ministry.
