New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) The people of the capital seemed excited as escalators, constructed at the six-foot over bridges in various parts of Delhi, became operational today.
The pedestrians, who had to earlier climb the stairs find it a 'pleasant surprise'.
Murari, working in a travel agency at the ISBT Kashmere Gate said, ''It is a good job done. It will be highly beneficial for the weak, diseased and aged alike''.
The first day also saw people, who had come specially to admire the new look of the over bridges. Nand Kumar had come from Jahangirpuri after hearing about the escalators from his school mates. ''I am really happy to see the kind of facilities the government is providing to the citizens,'' he exclaimed.
Surender Kumar, who runs a PCO booth next to the ISBT over bridge finds it an object of attraction. ''It is an added grace and makes the over bridge and the entire area look beautiful,'' he said.
The escalator, besides benefitting the aged people will also help in balancing the crowd on the stair cases.
However, some people like Sunil Kumar had the opinion that ''there is nothing great in it. We have escalators in all the malls, so what is new?'' There were also people asking why there were escalators only to climb up. PWD Engineer-in-Chief R Subramanian justified, ''It is easy to climb down but difficult and tiring to climb up, therefore this move has been taken''.
A security guard has also been stationed at every over bridge to check any nuisance and assist people in using the escalator. Mr Subramanian added, ''A guard has been appointed as a precautionary measure and this will continue for some time''.
Regarding the security, upkeep and maintenance of the escalator, he said, ''the company (Schnilder), which has supplied the escalator will maintain it for the next five years''.
''The government will collect information on the functioning and the response of the people towards this new service after a week's time,'' Mr Subramanian added.
The six over bridges with escalators are located at ITO, Maharani Bagh, Raja Garden, Nanak Pura, Satya Niketan and ISBT Kashmere Gate.
