Gopalganj, Sep 28 (UNI) In yet another case of lynching in Bihar, an alleged thief was beaten to death by angry villagers at Supravia near here early today.

Police said the incident took place when a group of village guards intercepted three alleged thieves while they were fleeing after commiting theft in a house and started beating them mercilessly.

While two of the victims managed to escape, one succumbed to injuries.

The villagers later dumped the body which was recovered by the police. A case of murder had been lodged in the local police station against some villagers.

However, unconfirmed reports said the victims were daily labourers returning home through the village after collecting wood and other daily essentials. They were confronted by the village guards who mistook them to be thieves.

Of late alleging the lackadaisical attitudes of the state police in tackling rising crime, people had started taking law into their hands and lynched several alleged criminals.

Though Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had directed the police to take immediate action against perpetrators on both sides but there was no sign of change.

During the last fortnight as many as 15 alleged criminals were beaten to death by mobs in different parts of Bihar. These included ten at Vishali on charge of petty theft which shocked the entire nation.
