Srinagar, Sep 27 (UNI) Expressing concern over the reports about delay in disbursement of pension to people solely depending upon this meagre assistance, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has directed the Social Welfare Department to streamline the functioning at the ground level.
The Social Welfare Department (SWD), which deals with the problems of poorest of the poor of the society, should make all out efforts to uplift this segment, the Committee opined.
The PAC discussed the functioning of department and suggested various measures for its improvement.
The Committee asked the secretary to ensure timely disbursement of pension to beneficiaries who are solely dependent upon this meagre assistance from the department.
''There are reports that people are not receiving the pension in time and department should attend this vital issue on priority and redress the problems of deprived lot,'' the Committee observed.
The Committee asked for maintaining transparency while establishing new Anganwari Centres and appointing Anganwari Workers and helpers as per norms and merit keeping in view the topography of some areas.
The Committee also asked for earmarking funds for purchase of machinery for milk chilling plant at Charwal, Kathua for which the building has been constructed.
Secretary Social Welfare N K Verma briefed the Committee about the performance and various schemes being implemented by the department.
He said the state government has been sanctioned 6711 more Anganwari centres from the centre, which would be established during the current year as per the norms.
He said the centre has agreed to provide more centres for uncovered areas in the state.
