Kolkata, Sep 27 (UNI) An additional 10,000 policemen would be deployed in the coming Durga Puja to prevent any eventuality in the city, Additional Commissioner of Police Subrata Sarkar said today.
He said 1,127 pujas would be held this year and around thirty to forty lakh people would visit the pandals.
'' We have held discussions with all the administrative departments, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation(KMC), Fire Brigade, Metro rail and railways on August 6 so that the festival could be held smoothly.'' He said metro rail and railway authority have agreed to run more trains for the pujas.
The administration has decided the immersion date on October 21, 22 and 23 and the KMC has agreed to renovate the ghats where immersions would be held.
'' We have appealed to the people to inform Lalbazar or the local police station immediately if any suspicious material was found on the road or have any information regarding the explosive material,'' he said.
Fire Brigade Minister Pratim Chatterjee said the front gate of the pandals should be 14 feet by 12 feet and a huge gap should be kept in front for letting the fire brigade van enter.
He said 300 fire brigade vans and 2300 to 2400 of its workers would be present on the festive days and no leave would be sanctioned to them for those threee days.
State Environment Minister Sailen Sarkar said West Bengal Pollution Control Board has been directed to open a control room during Durga Puja and Kali Puja to receive public complaints and take effective steps for redressal of the grievances of the complainants.
'' We have urged the puja committees and the public to minimise pollution of water bodies during immersion of the idols and thus protect the environment.'' UNI
