Bangkok, Sep 26 (UNI) Thailand has expressed concern over the ongoing logjam between Myanmar's military rulers and the Buddhist clergy-led popular pro-democracy movement, urging both sides to show restraint and resolve the political stand-off peacefully.

''As a fellow ASEAN member country and a close neighbour of Myanmar, we sincerely hope that there be peace and national reconciliation in Myanmar,'' the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement here.

Meanwhile, the authorities said they were prepared to evacuate nationals from Myanmar, if necessary, although Thai Army chief and coup leader Sonthi Boonyaratakalin expressed confidence today that that would not be needed.

Talking to reporters here, Gen Sonthi said the political situation in Myanmar would not reach a stage that would necessitate evacuation of Thai nationals working there.

''We have kept the Air Force on alert in case evacuation is needed...but it all depends on the situation in Myanmar,'' he said.
