Shimla, Sep 26 (UNI) Taxi operators in Himachal Pradesh have been directed to install meters on their taxis before October 20, failing which strict action will be taken against them, state transport commissioner Onkar Sharma today said.

The scheme, which was notified on December eight, last year, had been challenged in the state High Court, which in its September five decision directed the taxi operators to install meters on or before October 20, he said in a release here.

Mr Sharma said they have been directed to buy the meters from authorised dealers from Shimla View Body Building, Tara Devi, near here, and Walia Traders, 29 Civil Lines, Dharamshala who have been approved by the Controller Legal Metrology (Weights and Measures).

Strict action would be taken against operators who fail to install meters by October 20 under Section 86 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 under which their permits could also be cancelled, he added.
