Mumbai, Sep 26 (UNI) Wildcarder Somdev Dev Varman of India followed Rohan Bopanna footsteps and made his exit from the 416,000 dollar Kingfisher Airlines Open tennis tournament at the CCI hard courts here today.
Bopanna was beaten in a tough three setter late last night by by Frenchman Nicolas Devilder 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. While Varman who was down by 3-6, 3-0 against Fabio Fognini of Italy when the match was postponed last night due to rain, went down today in straight sets losing the second set in a tie-breaker at 10-8.
Fognini eventually won the encounter 6-3, 7-6 (8) to move into the second round.
The Italian, ranked 112 to Varman's 1035, also played sluggish towards the end and struggled with foot-faults but was able to hold his nerve and game to push into the second round, where he faces top seed Richard Gasquet.
Meanwhile, in other first round matches Olivier Rochus of Belgium had an easy outing as he cruised into the second round beating Robin Haase of Holland in straight sets.
Rochus, who is seeded eighth in this tournament, needed just over an hour to quell the challenge of Haase 6-2, 6-2.
