NABARD gives WDC status to three rural banks in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 26 (UNI) NABARD has sanctioned Women Development Cell (WDC) for three banks- Uttarbanga Kshetriya Gramin Bank, Hooghly District Central Cooperative Bank and Tamluk Ghatal Central Cooperative Bank in West Bengal.

The obsejective of the Cell was to create a gender friendly banking evironment for women by ensuring increased credit flow and to provide credit plus services for overall empowerment of women.

The scheme provides assistance towards awareness creation, publicity campaigns for women relating to banking credit, camps exclusively for women, cost of publishing literature and mobility allowances for the nodal oficer facilitating these activities, a NABARD official said.

The grant assistance can go upto a maximum of Rs 1.60 lakh for WDC per year for three years in addition to Rs30,000/- as one time assistance towards developing a gender responsive MIS. This also includes 100% refinance facility for the loans for investment credit given to women, both for farm and non-farm sectors.

The NABARD will also address the capacity building needs of women in rural areas through various women specific promotional programmes like ARWIND, Mhima and others.
