Bhubaneswar,Sep 26 (UNI) Orissa High Court has appointed senior advocate and former High Court bar association President Bijan Roy to inquire into the various aspects of bio-medical waste disposal system in the state.
A division bench of the court, comprising Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Mr Justice Indrajit Mohanty, while adjudicating a PIL filed by Maitree Sansad, a Cuttack based voluntary organisation, asked Mr Roy to submit the report by November 15 after making a thorough examination of the mechanism followed by health care institutions for the waste management.
The organisation in its petition alleged that violating the rules the hospitals and private nursing homes were dumping the medical waste in open posing a serious threat to the health of the people and prayed the court to direct the authorities to ensure that the health care institutions stick to the norms while disposing of the medical waste.
Mr Roy was appointed after Mr Justice (Retd) P C Mishra and Mr Justice (Retd) Amiya Padhi declined the offer on health ground.
The directive for inquiry came after the state Pollution Control Board failed to comply with the court directives to inquire into waste disposal system adopted by the three medical colleges and as well as private nursing homes and clinics in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
