LONDON, Sep 26 (Reuters) The British Open will be staged at Royal St George's in 2011 and at Royal Lytham in 2012, organisers the Royal&Ancient (R&A) said.

It will be the first time England will host golf's oldest major championship in successive years, with the recent pattern switching the venue annually between England and Scotland.

''We are delighted the Open is returning to Sandwich and Lytham, both outstanding championship courses that have produced a succession of worthy champions,'' David Hill, the R&A's director of championships, said in a statement, yesterday.

Royal St George's, in Sandwich on England's south-east coast, last staged the Open in 2003 when American Ben Curtis became one of the most unlikely major winners in history.

The Kent links course became the first layout outside Scotland to stage the British Open in 1894 when John H Taylor won the first of his five titles.

Royal Lytham and St Annes, situated on England's north-west coast, held its most recent Open in 2001 when American former world number one David Duval clinched his only major title.
