Samastipur, Sep 26 (UNI) At least five people, including three women and a child, died on the spot when their mud houses collasped due to heavy rain at Mahamada village in the district this morning.

Official reports reaching the district headquarterts here said the mishap occurred at around 0400 hours in the midst of heavy downpour when the victims were fast asleep in their houses.

Three members of one family, including a child and two women, and two members of another, including a 60-year old person, lost their lives.

Later, their bodies were recovered from the rubble and sent for post mortem to the district hospital here.

Bihar had been reeling due to uninterrupted rain and strong gail for the past 72 hours under the impact of a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

Life across the state, along with neighbouring Jharkhand and West Bengal, had been severely affected besides causing large scale damage to crops, uprooting trees and electric poles.

However, barring today's mishap, there was no report of any other loss of life from anywhere in the state, though a school student received minor burn injuries in Patna on September 24 after a snapped live electric wire fell on a school bus.

Meanwhile, several low lying areas in the capital city and elsewhere in the state had been inundated under knee-deep water following almost unabated rain since September 24 causing severe inconveniences to the people.

Several school authorities also announced closure of their institutions for two days because of the inclement weather.

The UNI office is also sorrounded by knee-deep filthy water for the past two days causing untold miseries to the employees.
