Patna, Sep 25 (UNI) Bihar Welfare Department Deputy Director Maharshi Ram was arrested here today for taking bribe in preparation of mutation papers of a land in 2006.

The state vigilance sleuths with Deputy Police Superintendent Prakash Nath Mishra arrested Mr Ram from his Phulwarisharif residence here.

According to charges, Mr Ram, the then Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Muzaffarpur, had issued the mutation papers for 1.57 acre of plot in the name of a land mafia ignoring the claims of one Mohammad Qurbam Ansari's wife and daughter, the real owners of the plot.

Mr Ram had allegedly got transferred ownership of one portion of that land in the name of his wife as bribe from the land mafia.

A warrant to attach Mr Ram's property was issued on April 18, 2007 following his failure to appear before the court despite several summons and arrest warrants.

Two circle inspectors have already been arrested and send to jail in this connection.

The arrested officer, who was currently posted at Munger, would be produced before a special court at Muzaffarpur after interrogation.
