Jammu, Sep 25 (UNI) At least 40 people, including senior police officials, were injured in clashes since the celebrations of India's Twenty-20 World Cup victory took an ugly turn in Rajouri town last night, official sources said today.

The jubilation over India's victory only lasted a few minutes, as two groups allegedly started pelting stones at each other in Rajouri town last night, Jammu IGP S P Vaid told UNI.

The Additional Superintendent of Police and the Station House Officer, Rajouri were among six security personnel who sustained injuries in the violence, besides 30 odd people of two groups.

Police resorted to firing shots in the air and tear gas shells after lathi-charge to bring situation under control.

People of one group, who were offering prayers, alleged that they were attacked by another group which was taking out a rally to mark the victory of India over arch-rival Pakistan in the shortest Twenty20 version of cricket, the Jammu IGP said.

The situation again turned unpleasant this morning after the supporters of the BJP attempted to breach the prohibitory order under section 144 imposed after the incident, Dr Vaid said.

Police had to repeat the cane drill and tear gas shells to control the situation, he said.

At least eight agitators were injured in the lathi-charge by the police.
