NABARD's initiative to prevent ryots suicides
Bangalore, Sep 25 (UNI) NABARD has initiated innovative measures to discourage farmers from committing suicides, in five select districts of Karnataka where large number of such incidents had been reported, Chief General Manager Deepak B Gore said here today.
Speaking to newsmen after participating at the State Level Award Function for Best Performing SHG-Bank Linkage and Farmer's Club Programme, Mr Gore said on, NABARD trained members of Farmers Club, will be working at villages, in six affected districts in Karnataka to counsel their counterparts in distress due to mounting debts or crop failure.
Elaborating on the initiative, he said selected farmers had been provided training by professionals to counsel those who contemplating suicide.
Such initiatives would be extended to all districts in Maharashtra, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh where Prime Minister's 'farmers' package' had been announced.
