9 EGS teachers threaten to commit suicide

Kapurthala, Sep 25 (UNI) Nine Education Guarantee Scheme (EGS) teachers today climbed on the top of a water tank and threatened to commit suicide by jumping from it.

The teachers climbed on the Improvement Trust water tank here against the detainment of over 100 members of EGS Teachers Union Punjab.

District authorities reached the spot and tried to persuade the teachers to alight from the water tank but to no avail.

President of the Union Pritpal Singh along with other teachers, who were detained at Dhilwan police station, were released.

The administration arranged Pritpal's talk with Punjab Education Minister Dr Upinderjeet Kaur, who asked them to come to Chandigarh for talks on Wednesday and assured them to consider their demands sympathetically.

Following which, Pritpal also climbed the water tank and brought down all the nine teachers from the tank.

Earlier, over 100 teachers of different districts were detained when they were proceeding from Shalamar Bagh to Education Minister's house on Sulatanpur Lodhi road for a dharna.
