Kolkata, Sep 25(UNI) For the first time in Eastern India, 3D Mesh, the latest technology in hernia operation, will be applied in a city nursing home to ensure low recurrence of the ailment and offering patients to recuperate fast.

" The use of 3 D Mesh technique is a leap forward in the art of herminal repair. Worldwide this technique, which takes 20 to 30 minutes of operation time, has less than five per cent incidence of recurrence and is much cheaper," noted hernia specialist Dr Sanjay De Bakshi said.

With this technique it was possible to perform surgery only with the help of local anaesthesia, he said.

The mesh is in the form of a double layer mesh, one lying under and the other above the hernial defect, joined by a connector, which acts also like a plug for the defect. It is the only mesh that that comprehensively covers the defect from all sides.

In reply to a question, Dr De Bakshi said an estimated two million incidences of hernia were reported from different parts of the country every year.

Approximately 75 per cent of all hernias occur in the groin and two thirds cases are indirect while one third direct.
