2 killed in Jaffna mine blast in Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sept 25 (UNI) At least two people including one woman were killed and three government soldiers were wounded in a mine blast in the Northern Jaffna peninsula, military here said.

According to military sources, the senior lady lecturer attached to the Jaffna University, M Saradha (42) and a technical officer, Kandan Naishan (25) were killed in the blast at Sithankerni junction on the Manipay-Karainagar road when the suspected Tamil Tiger rebels detonated a claymore mine this morning.

Claiming that the target of the LTTE was a military foot patrol, the military said the three soldiers sustained minor injuries in the attack, resulting in tension in the area.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry said the fresh clashes erupted in the Wanni battlefront last evening had left at least nine LTTE cadres and three soldiers killed while several more wounded on both sides.

The fierce clashes erupted when the LTTE attempted to break the Forward Defence Lines (FDLs) of the army in the Giant Tank area in the north-western Mannar district.
