Puducherry, Sep 24 (UNI) Over 1,000 volunteers of the DMK in the Union Territory, led by party convenor and former Chief Minister R V Janakiraman, courted arrest by staging a demonstration near the BJP headquarters at Anna Nagar here to protest the 'fatwa' against party President M Karunanidhi for his critical remarks on Lord Rama.
As announced earlier, party workers gathered at Anna Nagar.
However, as they were prevented by the police from proceeding to the BJP office, they shouted slogans and staged a demonstration. In a bid to remove them from the place, police arrested them.
Meanwhile, DMK youth wing workers, under the leadership of Legislator R Siva, were arrested for burning the effigy of VHP leader Ram Vilas Vedanti for issuing the 'fatwa'. They took out a procession from Jeeva theatre to join the party workers demonstrating at BJP headquarters. However, by the time they reached Nellithoppe, the workers agitating had been arrested. The processionists then burnt three effigies of Mr Vedanti and courted arrest.
