Gangtok, Sep 24 (UNI) The Sikkim State Election Commission (SEC) today announced that the Panchayat elections will be held on October 26 in the state.
An official release here said that nomination papers had been issued and candidates could file their nominations for the elections from today.
The last date for filing nominations was October 1 and the scrutiny of nominations would take place on October 3. The last date for withdrawal was October 5, the release added.
District collectors had been appointed as Returning Officers of territorial constituencies of Zilla Panchayats for accepting the nomination papers and for scrutiny.
There are 161 Gram Panchayat Units in the state, including 40 in East Sikkim, 53 in West Sikkim, 45 in South Sikkim and 19 in North Sikkim and the total number of Panchayat seats is 888. Similarly, there are 93 Zilla Panchayat seats in the state.
Women had already been provided 40 per cent reservation in the Panchayat body.
Gram Panchayats of the three districts of East, West and South had been grouped separately as well as the returning officers and assistant returning officers were appointed separately.
However, the district collector of North would act as returning officer for accepting the nomination papers of all Gram Panchayats of the North District.
All nomination papers of the candidates in East, South and North districts would be accepted at the respective district headquarters and the nomination papers for the West district would be submitted at Gyalshing and Soreng, the release added.
