BJP candidate wins PBMC Chairman elections

Port Blair, Sep 24 (UNI) BJP-backed candidate R Damodaran was today unanimously elected as the new chairman of the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC).

Official sources said here that the elections were conducted under the supervision of Electoral Officer and Secretary of the Council Mohemmad.

''My first priority will be to serve the people of Port Blair to the best of my abilities and provide them civic amenities,'' the new Chairman told newspersons after the election.

The PBMC is the lone civic body in the archipelago and has 18 elected and three nominated councillors.

The name of Mr Damodaran was proposed by DMK councillor Raja Marudvanan and he was elected without any opposition.

Meanwhile, the BJP organised a rally, led by BJP state president Vishal Jolly and R Damodaran, to celebrate the victory.

Presently, the BJP is into alliance with the DMK and RJD in the Islands.
