Bahraich, Sep 23 (UNI) Noted social activist Teesta Seetalvad has come foward to help the victims of the alleged mass rape in Dhannidih village of neighbouring Shravasti district.

Teesta and former Lucknow University vice chancellor Dr Roop Rekha Verma visited Dhannidih yesterday and assured ''justice'' to the rape victims.

Talking to Newspersons here, Teesta expressed surprise over the ''lax attitude'' of the government in the matter.

''No FIR has been registered against the accused till date and such a reluctant attitude has only emboldened the culprits,'' she said.

Teesta informed that she would meet Uttar Pradesh DGP tomorrow and move court, if the ''victims'' were denied justice.

On July 10, one Salim of Dhannidih village had eloped with Vandana. This incident sparked violence in the village and some women were also allegedly raped.

State minister Daddan Mishra's brother Ashok Mishra was the prime accused in the case the and the opposition had demanded that the minister resign.

Two policemen were suspended and another was dismissed from service.
