PRAGUE, Sep 23 (Reuters) World number one Roger Federer beat Tomas Berdych 7-6 7-6 6-3 to bring Switzerland level at 2-2 with the Czech Republic today in their Davis Cup World Group playoff.
The 26-year-old Swiss showed no signs of fatigue in his third match in three days, needing two hours and 27 minutes to put away the Czech number one.
Federer won his opening singles over Radek Stepanek on Friday but lost in the doubles yesterday.
In the final reverse singles, Stanislas Wawrinka will play Stepanek and, if he loses, Switzerland will drop out of the World Group for the first time since 1994.
Federer conserves his energy these days for grand slam titles and the ATP Tour but comes to the rescue of the Swiss when they face dropping out of the Davis Cup top flight.
