Chennai, Sep 23 (UNI) The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) today burnt the effigies of VHP leader and former BJP MP Ram Vilas Vedanti for issuing a ''fatwa'' against DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi for his critical remarks against Lord Ram and Ramayana.
DPI General Secretary Thol Thirumavalavan led the agitation in front of the Periyar statue at the Arterial Anna Salai.
About 300 DPI workers shouted-slogans denouncing the VHP leader for issuing the ''fatwa'' and burnt his effigy. They also demanded immediate withdrawal of the ''fatwa''.
Police sources said similar agitations were held in various parts of Tamil Nadu where the effigies of Mr Vedanti and Senior BJP leader L K Advani were burnt.
In some places, DPI workers were arrested by the police.
