Kolkata, Sep 23: Torrential rains with gusty winds since last evening has disrupted life in entire Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata. Large parts of the city were inundated causing traffic snarls.
The city experienced severe waterlogging and in some areas the water was knee-deep. The incessant rains also affected railway services as many trains were cancelled and delayed following flooded tracks.
Many areas in the city experienced severe loadshedding as the strong winds had uprooted many trees and electric poles. Met officials said yesterday's well marked Low Pressure area over West Central Bay and adjoining North West Bay of Bengal off the Orissa coast had concentrated into a depression.
The system was likely to intensify further and under its impact, heavy to moderate rainfall would occur over Gangetic and coastal Bengal during the next 48 hours, Met sources added. The Alipore Met office recorded 94.9 mm rainfall so far.
