Kolkata, Sep 22 (UNI) Police burst several rounds of teargas shells and Rapid Action Force(RAF) was deployed to ward off a marauding mob, which went on a rampage in the Park Circus area of the southern part of the city following the ''mysterious'' death of a youth.
Police here said the local youths, agitated over yesterday's death, blocked the road demanding arrest of noted city-based businessman Ashok Todi.
The irate crowd alleged that Mr Todi was involved in the death of Rizwan Rehman(32), who was married to the former's daughter Priyanka.
Police and RAF fought a pitched battle with the rampaging mob, which torched a police jeep and lobbed several rounds of teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Eastern Suburban Division) Partho Sarathi Ghosh suffered head injuries when the agitators pelted stones at the policemen.
The victim's body was found on the railway track near Dum Dum railway station yesterday and his brother alleged that Mr Todi masterminded the murder as his daughter married Rizwan against his wishes.
A police picket had been set up in the troubled area, which was still gripped by tension.
Meanwhile, SUCI state secretary Provash Ghosh in a release had demanded a probe into the whole episode and cautioned against the spread of communal tension following the incident.
