Lucknow, Sep 22 (UNI) Muslim religious leaders and intellectuals today condemned the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the first war of independence in 1857 as 'Vijay Diwas' by a 19-member British group.
They termed such celebrations as an affront to the dignity of the martyrs of the first war of the country's independence.
Post a meeting at the famous Tile Wali Masjid in the Uttar Pradesh capital, prominent Shia cleric Maulanasyed Kalbe Jawwad and All India United Muslim Morcha president Dr M A Siddiqui said the observation of 'Vijay Diwas' by the British group at different places in the country was ''shameful.'' They demanded immediate ban on such events, lest a ''befitting reply'' is mounted.
The Muslim leaders observed that the countrymen cherished the first war of independence and the observance of the event as 'Vijay Diwas' by the British group in India, was blatantly audacious and condemnable.
''If our martyrs are humiliated in such a way, the people would never tolerate it,'' they warned in unison.
They reiterated that if the British group tried to observe 'Vijay Diwas' here on September 24 as per their schedule, they would not be allowed to enter the city limits.
