Mob goes on rampage during Ganesh Idol immersion

Bangalore, Sep 22 (UNI) Police burst tear gas shells and fired in the air to quell a mob which indulged in arson and looting in Gangavathi Town in Koppal District during the Ganesh Idol immersion ceremony late last night.

According to police sources here, trouble started when some miscreants threw stones at the procession in the town.

In protest, the mob went on a rampage and reportedly doused many shops belonging to a particular community.

Following this, the processionists abandoned the Ganesh Idol on the road and targeted shops belonging to minority community.Police finally intervened to restore normalcy.

The situation, which was tense in Gangavathi, was brought under control, Additional Director General of Police Shankar Bidari informed UNI.''Additional police forces have been sent to the town as a precautionary measure. The idol, which had been abandoned, was taken again in a procession and immersed this morning,'' he said.

Mr Bidari also informed that prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr PC was clamped as a precautionary measure.

''No arrests have been made while special investigation squad has been formed to nab the culprits, the ADGP said.
