Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Lahore Rugby Football Club kicked off proceedings with a hard fought 22-13 win over Delhi Hurricanes in the 74th Vodafone Essar All-India and South Asia Rugby Tournament played at the Bombay Gymkhana here today.
In other games, Maharashtra State Police thrashed Calcutta Cricket and Football Club 38-0, while Future Hope won over Delhi Lions 15-8.
The game of the day by far was the one between Lahore RFC and Delhi Hurricanes. Trying to get used to the conditions, the Pakistani team powered ahead to score a try almost immediately after kickoff.
Sahir Aslam put Lahore RFC 5-0 up. From then on, Lahore struggled as the conditions were new to them. Lack of concentration allowed Mithun to reach out and score a try, from within a large crowd. The try stunned Lahore and the Delhi side continued to apply pressure on the Lahore defence. A few technical errors saw Delhi getting awarded a number of penalties. Amit Lochab converted one to put the Hurricanes 8-5 ahead.
The second half saw Lahore get their act together. They were able to exploit the inexperience of the Delhi side. They quickly scored two tries in succession and Arsalan Zayed converted to put Lahore 17-8 ahead. Lahore powered on in the latter stages to score their fourth try of the game when Arsalan Zayed used his power and height to push aside the defenders and score a try. By virtue of scoring four tries, Lahore secured a bonus point.
