Bhubaneswar, Sep 22 (UNI) The depression that lay centred over northwest Bay of Bengal about 100 km southeast of Puri is likely to cross the Orissa coast by this evening.
Local weather office sources here today said the system was likely to intensify further and move in a North Westerly direction and cross the Orissa coast between Gopalpur and Paradeep close to Puri by this evening.
Under its impact, heavy to very heavy showers were likely to occur at a few places in Orissa during the next 36 hours with squalls from North-Easterly direction with speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph was likely to prevail along and off the Orissa coast.
As a precautionary measure, Signal no III had been hoisted at all Orissa ports and fishermen were advised not to venture out into the sea.
Met sources said yesterday's well marked Low Pressure Area over West Central Bay and adjoining North West Bay of Bengal off South Orissa-North Andra Pradesh coast concentrated into a depression and lay centred close to the southeast of Puri.
Torrential rain caused by the depression lashed many parts of the state affecting life at many places.
Chandbali recorded the highest rainfall of 19 cm followed by Aul Pingal with 18 cm and Pattamundai and Akhuapada with 15 cm each.
Jaipur and Baripada recorded seven cm rainfall, the lowest during the last 24 hours.
While Kendrapara and Kakatpur received 13 cm rainfall each, Balasore, Udala, Soro, Jenapur and Munduli received 12 cm rainfall each during the period, sources said.
