TOKYO, Sep 21 (Reuters) Spot gold held on to gains on Friday after surging to a 28-year high the previous day, as the dollar hung near a record low against the euro and crude oil prices remained strong.

-- Spot gold stood at $734.50/735.00 an ounce as of 0118 GMT, versus $734.20/735.00 in late New York.

-- It rose more than 2 percent to $738.30 on Thursday, its highest since January 1980, when it hit a record high of $850.

-- The most-active December gold contract on the COMEX division of the New York Mercantile Exchange rose to $742.0 an ounce in electronic trade on Friday, up $2.10 from Thursday's settlement.

-- The most active gold futures contract for August 2008 delivery on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange stood at 2,743 yen a gram, up 24 yen or about 0.9 percent from the previous close.

-- The euro hovered around $1.4065 , little changed from late levels in New York on Thursday, when it surged to $1.4099, its highest level since the single European currency was unveiled in 1999.

-- Oil's rise to a record high also fanned fears about inflation, driving investors to buy gold as a hedge.

-- U.S. crude for October delivery was trading above $83 a barrel in Globex electronic trading on Friday, after touching an all-time high of $84.10 the previous day, on supply concerns and storm worries.

-- Cash platinum was at $1,326/1,331 an ounce, compared to $1,323.40/1,330.40 in late New York.

-- Spot silver inched up to $13.41/13.46 an ounce from $13.36/13.41 in New York.

-- Spot palladium traded at $337/341 an ounce, from $336.40/340.40.
