Lucknow, Sep 20 (UNI) In a major decision in favour of sugarcane farmers aimed at checking underweighing of their produce, the Uttar Pradesh government today decided to increase the penalty for under-weighing from existing Rs 5000 to Rs 50,000.
In addition to this, the penalty for continuing the offence would now be Rs 5000 per day from Rs 1000 per day.
The change in these provisions would be made effective after amending certain sections of UP Cane (supply and purchase) Act 1953, an official spokesman said here today.
A decision to this effect was taken at the state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati. Sections 23 and 24 are being amended through this decision, the spokesman said.
