Jaipur, Sep 20 (UNI) The Rajasthan Assembly today witnessed exchange of heated arguments between ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over the Ram Sethu issue after the topic was raised by BJP member Prabhu Lal.
The issue was raised by Prabhu Lal (BJP) during the Zero Hour on a short notice basis but was opposed by the opposition saying that the House was not an appropriate forum for this issue.
Expressing his concern over the Centre's plan of destroying the Ram Sethu for the Sethusmaundram project, he said the project should be implemented without destroying the mythical bridge.
Congress party members Mr Ram Narain Meena and Mr Mahir Ajad opposed Mr Lal's bid and urged Speaker Sumitra Singh to stop him from speaking further.
Mr Meena said since the issue was pending befor the supreme court , the chair should not allow the discussion over it in the House.
However, the speaker allowed the member to continue as it was a matter of religious sentiments and she did see not harm in allowing Mr Prabhu Lal to speak.
The house witnessed noisy scenes when Pradhyuman Singh(Congress) charged the BJP leadership of making unnecessary hue and cry over this issue only to draw political mileage.
Mr Singh said the BJP leadership was not concerned with people's religious sentiments but it only wanted to make it a poll plank for drawing political mileage.
He also attracted pithced opposition from the BJP benches when he said that the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government at the Centre was responsible for the project, the present government was simply following it up.
