Jaipur, Sep 20 (UNI) As many as 40 activists of National Students Union of India (NSUI), including its national president Nadeem Zaved, sustained injuries when police used force to disperse them during a demonstration outside the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly today.
They were holding demonstration to press for their demand of early announcement of student union elections in university student unions in the state.
The situation turned violent when some of the demonstrators started throwing stones at the police personnel. The police cautioned them to disperse peacefully but it did not work and subsequently they used batons to move them.
Congress state president B D Kalla said a large number of students sustained injuries in the lathicharge.
He said at least 40 injured were rushed to the SMS Hospital for treatment.
The issue of student unions election also figured in the Rajasthan Assembly during the Zero Hour and education minister Ghanshyam Tiwari said he would make requisite announcement of the election programme after holding consultations with various student organisations, including the NSUI.
