Chennai, Sep 20 (UNI) For the third time in a row, Maersk Line bagged the 'Top Shipping Line of the Year' award for shipping maximum volumes through the Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL) at an award function organised by Dubai Port World (DPW) here.

This award was instituted in 2005 and Maersk Line had been winning it ever since, reflecting consistency and reliability in its service, a company release here today said.

Container volume at CCTL had grown from 4,00,000 TEUs in 2002 to 8,30,000 TEUs in 2006 and was projected to touch the one million TEU mark this year.

Maersk Line introduced its MECL2 service in March 2007, adding the volume significantly.

This first ever regular weekly direct service from Chennai to the US East Coast had made 27 calls since its launch, providing Southern India a direct link to the US East Coast with reduced transit time.

Maersk Line's direct service had been highly successful since it had been providing its customers increased profitability by causing a reduction in the inventory and better supply chain efficiency including that for refrigerated products, the release added.
