Shillong, Sep 20 (UNI) Peeved at the ''false assurance'' of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the Joint Action Committee for North Garo Hills District Demand Movement today called for a fresh 48-hour non-cooperation movement in East Garo Hills district.

The agitation would start from 0500 hours of September 25 in the proposed new district areas comprising four Assembly constituencies, Kharkutta, Resubelpara, Mendipathar and Bajengdoba, JAC publicity secretary Aldrin D Sangma told reporters at Garo Hills.

Recalling Ms Gandhi's assurance during her campaign for the 2003 elections in Resubelpara, the JAC spokesman said she had promised the people to upgrade Resubelpara to a district if her party came to power, both at the Centre and state.

But he rued that her promise failed to materialise.

''We will continue to agitate and rest only after creation of the North Garo Hills district,'' Mr Sangma said.

The JAC had been fighting for creation of North Garo Hills district since 1995. Several memoranda were also submitted to various chief ministers of the state.

The state government recently formed a task force, headed by the chief secretary, to examine the demands of various NGOs for cremation of more districts.
