Guwahati, Sep 20 (UNI) The general meeting of the Legal and Human Rights Cell of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee(APCC) was held here today.
Presiding over the meeting, APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita emphasised the need to be directed by law in all walks of life.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, in his speech as the chief guest, cited the example of Mahatma Gandhi and how his path of 'ahimsa' led to the fall of the British empire in India.
He exhorted all to forsake violence and embrace the ideals of peace for progress and prosperity of the state.
Earlier, in the inaugural speech, chairman of the APCC legal cell Dr Manjushree Pathak emphasised on the need of creating mass awareness for the proper implementation of the various acts enacted, as the benefits seldom percolate to the public due to lack of awareness.
All India Congress Committee secretary Chandan Bakshi, Assam Minister of Social Welfare Ajant Neog, APCC general secretary Haren Das, several leaders of the Congress party and senior advocates also spoke on the occasion.
The meeting was attended by over 500 lawyers and other legal experts from across the state.
