New Delhi, Sep 20 (UNI) The long-standing war of nerves between the AIIMS administraton and Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss has now manifested itself with the latter changing the date of Convocation of the premier health institute from September 25 to October 23.
The convocation at which about 650 students would be awarded degree certificates will be held on October 23 and not on September 25 as the health minister has a prior appointment on that day, health ministry sources said. They claimed that AIIMS Director P Venugopal had announced September 25 date for convocation without taking the minister, who is AIIMS President, into confidence.
The AIIMS director was required to issue notification at least one month in advance and also give advertisements in the newspapers before holding the convocation so that the recipients could come to receive the certificates, they pointed out.
Earlier, a major controversy had erupted on the AIIMS degree issue with resident doctors going on strike last month protesting in delay in issuance of degree certificates required for studies and getting jobs abroad. The minister had initially refused to sign the certificates on the plea that they carried the signatures of the registrar whose appointment he termed was "illegal". Later both the director and the minister had announced to issue certificates to students separately.
However, on the appeal of the agitating students, the Delhi High Court intervened and asked the minister to sign the certificates.
following which the talks were held between the director and the minister and 66 certificates were signed and issued to students who were going abroad.
Dr Ramadoss had criticised the director for not holding AIIMS convocation for the past two years. So the Director at that time had announced that the convocation will be held in September 25. But now the minister has postponed the date saying that he was not available on that date and the convocation be held on October 23.
