New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) The Railways generated Rs 17,943.02 crore of revenue earnings from freight traffic during the first five months of the current fiscal as compared to Rs 16,334.34 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 9.85 per cent.
The Railways carried 308.89 million tonnes of freight traffic during April-August this year as compared to 288.81 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, reflecting an increase of 6.95 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 189514 million to 198140 million during the period, showing an increase of 4.55 per cent.
The revenue from freight traffic during August this year was pegged at Rs 3,564.22 crore compared to Rs 3,112.22 crore during the corresponding period last year -- an increase of 14.52 per cent.
During the same month, the Railways carried 61.84 million tonnes of freight traffic as compared to 55.34 million tonnes in August last year, registering an increase of 11.75 per cent.
NTKM went up from 35429 million during August last year to 39478 million during the same period this year, showing an increase of 11.43 per cent.
Of the total earnings during August this year, Rs 1312.04 crore came from transportation of 26.17 million tonnes of coal, followed by Rs 328.10 crore from 4.48 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, Rs 298.26 crore from 5.92 million tonnes of cement and Rs 250.25 crore from 2.95 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL).
In addition, it earned Rs 241.30 crore from 2.88 million tonnes of foodgrains, Rs 202.25 crore from 2.09 million tonnes of iron and steel for steel plants, Rs 199.94 crore from 3.32 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs 165.57 crore from 4.54 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants and Rs 566.51 crore from 9.49 million tonnes of other goods.
