Mahanta alleges Cong govt failure in flood relief
Guwahati, Sep 19 (UNI) Former Assam chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta today criticised the Congress-led state government for allegedly failing to provide adequate relief in the flood-hit areas.
Addressing a press meet here, Mr Mahanta, who heads the Asom Gana Parishad (Progressive), said, ''Floods are a recurring problem in the state. But the Congress government was caught unaware and totally unprepared to tackle this annual problem.'' He alleged that relief materials, which should be distributed as per the rules in the Assam Relief Manual, were not been properly given and the flood-hit population was reeling under several problems.
The government had failed to give relief even after receiving funds from Centre, he added.
Mr Mahanta demanded that the government should announce in public the funds used for relief in the flood wave this year.
He also urged that farmers should be provided with rabi crop seeds as the time for khariff crops has already elapsed.
The former chief minister further demanded an inquiry into the breach of several embankments built with crores of rupees.
He also accused the state government for failing to check the rise in prices of essential goods.
