Puducherry, Sep 19 (UNI) About 200 persons today took out a procession and staged a demonstration before the Legislative Assembly here against the non-recruitment of girls for garments units in Tiruppur, as announced earlier.

According to police, Puducherry Welfare Minister M Kandasamy had recently announced that the administration had entered into an agreement with garment units in Tiruppur for recruitment of 8,000 girls for their units.

The recruitment was planned for today.

However, Legislators had strongly opposed the employment scheme, following which the Government had dropped the move to recruit girls.

As no authorities turned up for the interview, the agitated people marched to the Legislative Assembly and demanded to meet the Chief Minister.

A few of their representatives were allowed to meet the Chief Minister, who pacified them, following which the group dispersed, police said.
