Srinagar, Sep 19: A soldier was killed and four others were injured when militants ambushed an Army convoy on Srinagar-Leh national highway today, a defence ministry spokesman said.
However, official sources said one soldier was killed and 14 others were injured in the attack.
The spokesman said militants ambushed an army convoy near Ganiwan, Gund, about 25 km from here on the highway. Troops also retaliated and in the encounter one soldier died on the spot and four others were wounded. The injured were airlifted to Army base hospital.
The entire area was cordoned off and a massive search operation was launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack, he said. Official sources identified the deceased as Hawaldar S Kumar Roy. They said a jawan of CRPF of Road Opening Party (ROP) was also injured in the attack.
