New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) The 2010 Delhi Commonwealth games preparation will act as a catalyst for the speedy destruction of the capital if proper mechanisms were not placed, warned eminent personalities of the city.

A group of scholars under the aegis of a Non-Governmental organization (NGO) Hazard Centre have expressed their views. The NGO also came down heavily on the central government for neglecting more pressing demands of the day, like that of improving the living standard of the common man, impact on the economy and also the environment.

These scholars were putting forward their views after the NGO came up with a study on the expenditure in the Commonwealth games, which came to be a staggering 23000 crore.

Intellectuals like Dunu Roy, who incidentally is also heading the NGO, has expressed his disappointment that the government is hell bent on spending money from public coffers.

Roy said, '' It is important that the government formulate a committee, comprising of people from the concerned field and public representatives, which will oversee the preparation of the Commonwealth games.'' Criticising the government for not utilising the present infrastructure Roy said, ''At the time of Asian games the government had said that the infrastructure put in place will help the state but the fact is that after the Asiad the only organistaion which has opitimally used the national stadium is the National Literacy Mission.'' Roy also said India is organising the event under the influnce of big MNC's which have established themselves, after the opening of the economy in 1991, so that they can run their business from this country.

''The government laments the paucity of funds but it can shell out 23000 crore for a 10-day event,'' he added.

Going one step forward prominent journalist and columnist Praful Bidwai said,''The change in the land use pattern of Yamuna has helped the land racketeers to push for the construction in the river bed, which streches to almost 96 km.

''This is the common heritage of humanity, we need to preserve it. We can already see the decline of the city, after the games it will deteriorate further.

''The games have seen destruction of so many trees, the real estate prices has skyrocketed, is it helping the common man?'' Bidwai said.

According to the report filed by the NGO leaving the Los Angeles Olympics no other sports meet has been successful.
